Background

I started out as an electrician back in 2004, before moving into building controls and completing my electrical NVQ Level 3, 18th Edition and a full series of building control courses. Since then I’ve worked as a commissioning engineer, projects engineer and BMS design engineer across a mix of commercial, education, healthcare and industrial sites.

Over the years I’ve delivered projects with a range of organisations – from specialist controls companies to larger building services contractors. That’s given me a good mix of panel and software work: re-using existing kit where it makes sense, tightening up strategies, improving graphics and leaving systems in a state that’s easy for the next engineer to look after.

BMS runs in the family, so I’ve been around large-scale projects and integration conversations for years — but I’m hands-on: I build, test and commission.

I also enjoy mentoring newer engineers and apprentices – helping them understand not just what to click, but why a particular strategy or design choice makes sense in the real world.

Over the past several years, the BMS industry has taken a major technology leap, with traditional Building Management Systems quickly developing into smarter Building Energy Management Systems. To stay ahead of that shift, I’ve dedicated my spare time to developing a system that can be integrated directly into new or existing BMS installations, or added alongside an older system as a separate backbone. The goal is to connect building services and third-party systems through one smarter layer, helping sites communicate more effectively, improve control, reduce wasted energy and move closer to truly smart, energy-efficient buildings.

  • Tridium / Niagara for integration, graphics and site-wide strategies
  • Trend systems – strategy updates, migrations and re-use of existing I/O
  • Siemens systems (including Desigo / Apogee) and Landis & Staefa
  • Sauter and other modern BEMS platforms
  • BACnet, Modbus and other open protocols tying different kit together

How I like to work

Clear scope

Agree the target first: fix a fault, tidy a strategy, improve graphics, reduce alarms, train a team or plan an upgrade.

Safe changes

Work around agreed access, site rules and change windows so live buildings are not put at unnecessary risk.

Useful handover

Leave notes and practical recommendations that make sense to engineers, operators and managers.

Working boundaries

I keep the site wording deliberately clear: independent support, practical engineering and clear communication. Any manufacturer approvals, warranties, subcontract terms or site access rules should be confirmed for each project before work starts.
